The Wall Street Journal reports that in conference call with conservative king-maker Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family and several judges and long-time friends of Miers, both judges confirmed that Miers would definitely vote to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The day before the president’s announcement of Miers’ nomination, Dobson called Karl Rove for an explanation of the nomination. Supposedly Karl didn’t know how she would vote on Roe v. Wade, but directed him to Justice Hetch, long-time friend of Miers who could provide “background information.”
“What followed was a free-wheeling discussion about many topics, including same-sex marriage. Justice Hecht said he’d never discussed that issue with Ms. Miers. Then an unidentified voice asked the two men, “Based on your personal knowledge of her, if she had the opportunity, do you believe she would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade?” “Absolutely,” said Judge Kinkeade. “I agree with that,” said Justice Hecht. “I concur.”
Dobson later said in his radio program:
“When you know some of the things that I know — that I probably shouldn’t know — you will understand why I have said, with fear and trepidation, that I believe Harriet Miers will be a good justice.”
Dobson may now be subpoenaed for testimony related to the phone call during Meirs’ confirmation hearings.
So Dobson gets briefed by cabinet-level administration officials on the president’s decisions before they are announced to the public? To prepare the sheep?
